Bodyfurn: designed for how students really learn

Classrooms had always been built for stillness. Rows of rigid chairs, fixed posture, limited movement.

Students do not learn that way.

They lean forward to focus, lean back to listen, shift position to stay engaged, and turn to collaborate. Movement is constant, and it plays a crucial role in attention, comfort and behaviour.

Traditional school furniture was not designed for this. It was designed for control and uniformity, not for how students actually learn. Bodyfurn was created to change that.

From old school thinking to new school design

The status quo championed stillness. We dreamed of movement.

We knew there had to be a better way to design furniture that supports how students learn, while improving comfort throughout the school day.

The goal was simple. Create a chair that supports the body and encourages motion.

It began with 20,000 students and a tape measure

We set out to test a simple question. Could a well-designed ergonomic chair improve concentration and learning in the classroom?

We visited classrooms across New Zealand, measuring over 20,000 students and observing how they moved, behaved and engaged during lessons.

What we found was consistent. Most school chairs restricted movement and reduced circulation, leading to discomfort, fatigue and unproductive fidgeting over time.

This was not bad behaviour. It was students struggling; responding to furniture that did not support how they learn.

We believed a single chair could impact millions

From our research, one thing was clear. Students do not sit still to learn.

They lean in to concentrate, stretch back to listen, and turn to share with classmates. Movement is part of how they stay engaged.

We designed Bodyfurn with this in mind.

The chair was developed to move with the student, supporting posture while allowing dynamic motion that helps maintain circulation and reduce fatigue during long periods of sitting.

It worked.

Today, Bodyfurn has become a leading approach to active sitting in education, with over a million chairs used in schools around the world.

Made for natural movement

Bodyfurn is built around the way students naturally move throughout the day.

The design allows continuous, subtle movement while seated, so students can adjust posture, maintain comfort and stay focused without leaving their chair.

This reduces the need for disruptive movement while supporting sustained attention during lessons.

It encourages upright posture without forcing rigidity, allowing students to sit well while still moving freely.

Ventilated seat and back panels allow airflow around the body. This helps manage heat build-up and supports physical comfort.

What we see in classrooms

Bodyfurn is designed around the movement and comfort needs we observe in classrooms.

Its dynamic seating design supports:

  • Students staying focused for longer
  • Fewer disruptions during lessons
  • Reduced out-of-seat movement and chair tipping
  • Calmer, quieter learning environments
  • Improved comfort over longer periods

Student and teacher feedback, alongside university research, continues to inform how we evaluate Bodyfurn.

What the research indicates

Bodyfurn has been studied through exploratory classroom observations, a completed master’s study and Isaac Martin’s PhD thesis.

In the doctoral research, students using Bodyfurn.Flex showed increases in on-task behaviour and reductions in some disruptive behaviours. They also reported greater comfort and satisfaction with the seating. The results varied between the groups and measures studied, and the research found no significant improvement in mathematics test grades.

The full thesis, study methods and limitations are available on our research evidence page. A journal paper presenting findings from the research is currently under peer review.

Why this matters

Comfort, movement and behaviour are closely linked.

When students can move naturally and remain comfortable, they are better able to maintain circulation, manage fatigue and stay focused during the day.

These factors influence how students participate, how long they can sustain attention, and how settled the classroom environment becomes.

Seating plays a role within a wider system that includes air quality, temperature and acoustics.

Responding to real classroom challenges
“We set out to design a chair that responded to real classroom challenges; comfort, posture, fatigue and sustainability. Listening to students and teachers, and validating with science, helped us create a solution that works.”

The next generation of Bodyfurn

Bodyfurn.Flex builds on what we have learned in classrooms.

Designed for senior students and longer periods of sitting, it offers a wider seating profile, refined ergonomics, and enhanced comfort, while maintaining the same focus on natural movement.

It also reflects a more considered approach to production, incorporating high levels of recycled material and designed with end-of-life in mind.

Available in sled chair, stool and gas lift options, the range gives schools greater flexibility to provide consistent comfort and ergonomic support across different learning spaces and activities.

Built to last

Bodyfurn seating is designed for high-use environments and backed by a 10-year warranty.

Durable materials ensure consistent performance over time, while longer product life reduces the need for replacement and helps minimise waste.

This combination of robust construction and considered design provides long-term value for schools, including in busy classrooms where seating is moved and reconfigured throughout the day.
