The status quo championed stillness. We dreamed of movement.
We knew there had to be a better way to design furniture that supports how students learn, while improving comfort throughout the school day.
The goal was simple. Create a chair that supports the body and encourages motion.
We set out to test a simple question. Could a well-designed ergonomic chair improve concentration and learning in the classroom?
We visited classrooms across New Zealand, measuring over 20,000 students and observing how they moved, behaved and engaged during lessons.
What we found was consistent. Most school chairs restricted movement and reduced circulation, leading to discomfort, fatigue and unproductive fidgeting over time.
This was not bad behaviour. It was students struggling; responding to furniture that did not support how they learn.
From our research, one thing was clear. Students do not sit still to learn.
They lean in to concentrate, stretch back to listen, and turn to share with classmates. Movement is part of how they stay engaged.
We designed Bodyfurn with this in mind.
The chair was developed to move with the student, supporting posture while allowing dynamic motion that helps maintain circulation and reduce fatigue during long periods of sitting.
It worked.
Bodyfurn is built around the way students naturally move throughout the day.
The design allows continuous, subtle movement while seated, so students can adjust posture, maintain comfort and stay focused without leaving their chair.
This reduces the need for disruptive movement while supporting sustained attention during lessons.
It encourages upright posture without forcing rigidity, allowing students to sit well while still moving freely.
Ventilated seat and back panels allow airflow around the body. This helps manage heat build-up and supports physical comfort.
Bodyfurn is designed around the movement and comfort needs we observe in classrooms.

Student and teacher feedback, alongside university research, continues to inform how we evaluate Bodyfurn.
Bodyfurn has been studied through exploratory classroom observations, a completed master’s study and Isaac Martin’s PhD thesis.
In the doctoral research, students using Bodyfurn.Flex showed increases in on-task behaviour and reductions in some disruptive behaviours. They also reported greater comfort and satisfaction with the seating. The results varied between the groups and measures studied, and the research found no significant improvement in mathematics test grades.
The full thesis, study methods and limitations are available on our research evidence page. A journal paper presenting findings from the research is currently under peer review.

Comfort, movement and behaviour are closely linked.
When students can move naturally and remain comfortable, they are better able to maintain circulation, manage fatigue and stay focused during the day.
These factors influence how students participate, how long they can sustain attention, and how settled the classroom environment becomes.
Seating plays a role within a wider system that includes air quality, temperature and acoustics.
The Bodyfurn collection includes chairs and stools for students from early years through to adult learning environments.
Each product follows the same ergonomic principles, helping schools provide consistent comfort, movement and support across classrooms, specialist spaces and shared learning areas.
Ergonomic, durable seating that supports natural movement, comfort and focus throughout everyday classroom learning.
Elevated, easy-to-move seating designed for practical learning in science, technology and specialist spaces.
Elevated ergonomic seating with additional back support for comfort during practical learning and focused tasks.
Height-adjustable ergonomic seating that supports natural movement and comfort across shared learning and workspaces.
Height-adjustable seating that supports active sitting in collaborative, practical and flexible learning environments.

Bodyfurn.Flex builds on what we have learned in classrooms.
Designed for senior students and longer periods of sitting, it offers a wider seating profile, refined ergonomics, and enhanced comfort, while maintaining the same focus on natural movement.
It also reflects a more considered approach to production, incorporating high levels of recycled material and designed with end-of-life in mind.
Available in sled chair, stool and gas lift options, the range gives schools greater flexibility to provide consistent comfort and ergonomic support across different learning spaces and activities.
Bodyfurn seating is designed for high-use environments and backed by a 10-year warranty.
Durable materials ensure consistent performance over time, while longer product life reduces the need for replacement and helps minimise waste.
This combination of robust construction and considered design provides long-term value for schools, including in busy classrooms where seating is moved and reconfigured throughout the day.
Selected Bodyfurn seating is independently tested and AFRDI Blue Tick certified to AS/NZS 4610.2, the Australian and New Zealand standard for school and educational chairs. This verifies its strength, durability and stability for demanding classroom environments.
Bodyfurn.Flex seating has also achieved AFRDI Green Tick Gold 150 certification, recognising its lower environmental impact and responsible approach to materials and manufacturing.

Bodyfurn® seating is manufactured from high-quality polypropylene, formulated for durability, UV stability and everyday classroom use. Chair frames are constructed from high-tensile steel and finished with a protective powder coat for long-term strength and corrosion resistance.
The Bodyfurn® Flex range incorporates recycled polypropylene, with the plastic component containing up to 92% post-consumer recycled material. Depending on the product, Bodyfurn® Flex seating is between 89–92% recyclable, with additional material suitable for downcycling.
Recommended seat and table heights vary based on student age, activity type and classroom use. As a general guide, senior students typically use a seat height of around 460 mm with a table height of approximately 730 mm, while younger students may require seat heights closer to 260 mm with tables around 455 mm high.
For general guidance, please refer to our School Furniture Size Guide. Our team can also assist with recommendations based on your specific learning environment.
The recommended maximum user weight is 120 kg for the Bodyfurn Senior Sled Chair and up to 135 kg for Bodyfurn Flex seating, depending on the model.
These ratings are recommended limits for everyday use and do not represent the point at which the product may fail. All Bodyfurn seating is designed and tested for durability in high-use learning environments.

Bodyfurn Flex seating contains up to 92% post-consumer recycled polypropylene. Depending on the model, it is 89–92% recyclable, with some remaining materials suitable for downcycling.
Bodyfurn products are made for long-term use and often remain in service beyond their warranty period. Contact our team for spare parts or guidance on responsible end-of-life options.
Active sitting describes seating that allows small, continuous movement rather than holding the body in one fixed position. In a classroom, a student can lean forward to write, shift back to listen, or turn towards a group without leaving their chair.
Most school chairs hold the body still and don’t allow for natural movement. The Bodyfurn seat and back move with the student, supporting posture while allowing motion. The shell is ventilated, and each size is based on measurements taken from students in real classrooms.
Bodyfurn is made in a range of seat heights matched to student height rather than year level. See our school furniture size guide here.
